Delft Blue 2.0

By "remastering" an old Delft blue plate, the lifespan of this piece is extended in an innovative way. Old Delft blue plates, which normally hang on the wall at your grandparents or are stored away due to a change in taste, are now given a second life.

For this project, I apply a second layer to the existing plates, shifting the composition and giving it a sign of upcycling. The plates are painted with gold or silver luster, whereby the design partly disappears under the luster after a firing. A label is printed on the back of each plate.

By placing the plates in a wooden frame, the function changes: from wall plate to bowl. But also with a wink: due to the extra heating, some plates can come under tension and break. The frame, which is specially cut to size for each board, protects the board. The fracture lines are additionally fixed with a Japanese glue technique: Kintsugi (= golden connection).

A text has been lasered into the frame, which has a decorative function but also updates the concept: it is becoming increasingly important that we know what our products consist of or where they come from. The text describes the ingredients that make up ceramic plates.

This series consists of 9 wall and decorative plates.

Motivation of the artist

The current time asks us, designers, to be aware of the materials we use. By "remastering" an old Delft blue plate, the life of this piece is extended in an innovative and sustainable way. Old Delft blue plates, which normally hang on the wall of your grandparents or are stored due to a change in taste, are now given a second life!
